When he was alive, Henri Rousseau was not taken seriously because his paintings seemed childish: It is no surprise that his planar perspectives and bright rendering of jungle forest and creatures, visualized only in his mind were regarded by fine art circles in Paris as naive. Yes, they appear to be light-hearted, but they are compelling and charming. He died poor and without recognition in 1910.

Inside us, as children, there is a strong urge to dwell among trees, to climb them and become a king, high in a tower, looking down at the world. A tree is an adventure, and a hideout.  

 

How many of us did not spend time outdoors dreaming about a tree house? I spent most of my childhood under the canopy of Cypress trees, Weeping Willows and great Pines, making a place of my own.

A Forest

I have been working for the last 6 months on a project. I have realized it has been an outlet for my own school-days memories. My school was in the middle of a forest and my proposal at present for Forest Hill School is to bring back the forest to the playground… but an abstract kind of forest…
